At birth;
baby is just sensitive to lights.
Within a couple of weeks;
the retina starts to develop and baby able to appreciate shapes, patterns and colors.
Within months;
baby will developed the ability to focus and track moving objects.
After 6 months to 1 year;
baby started to reach and grasp things as their 3D vision is established.
In normal condition, children are long sightedness in nature. During the development, eye follow a natural process known as emmetropization until age 6. This process, the power of eyes will change from long sightedness to emmetropia (zero power).
It is crucial, that all children’s eyes are checked by a qualified optometrist or an eye doctor because not all children with significant long sighted require a correction with glasses.
Does a child behave in a way that suggest a vision problem or eye problem??
Here are rules of thumb for parents:
If the child,
* Does not watch or follow an object.
* Touches things to help recognize them.
* One eye looks turned in or out.
* React strongly to light.
* Head turn or tilt when viewing object.
* Experience any double vision.
* Frequent Blink.
* Avoid reading.
* Complaint of headaches.
A good visual perception is very important to allow good coordination, reaction and learning. Optometric Association suggests that children should have their 1st eye check as early as 6 months old.
